Bolton Alleges Trump Used Military Aid to Pressure Ukraine for Political Favor
John Bolton, a former US Ambassador to the United Nations and former White House national security adviser, testified before the House Intelligence Committee on Tuesday, providing damning evidence that President Trump engaged in impeachable conduct by pressuring Ukraine to investigate his political rivals.
Bolton testified that he had helped plan attempted coups in Venezuela and other countries, but that he had never seen a president use his power for personal political gain in the way that Trump had done with Ukraine.
Bolton's testimony is a major blow to Trump's defense, as it provides eyewitness evidence that the president abused his power by withholding military aid to Ukraine in order to pressure its government into investigating former Vice President Joe Biden, a potential political rival for Trump in the 2020 election.
The House Intelligence Committee is expected to vote on articles of impeachment against Trump later this week. If the House votes to impeach Trump, he will become the third president in US history to be impeached.
